Recipients of the 2018 Horse Sport Ireland International Breeder Prizes announced

In 2018 Horse Sport Ireland introduced new breeder prizes to further recognise and reward the individuals responsible for breeding Ireland’s top Show Jumping and Eventing horses.

These prizes are awarded to the breeders of the top three Irish-bred horses, irrespective of the horse’s studbook of origin, in the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) year-end rankings in both Show Jumping and Eventing. The breeder’s prizes for both disciplines are issued as follows: 1st (€1,500), 2nd (€1,000) and 3rd (€500).

Suma’s Zorro

The leading Irish-bred Show Jumper in this year’s rankings is the $1Million Rolex Grand Prix winner Suma’s Zorro, bred in Suma Stud by Susan Lanigan-O’Keeffe & Marily Power, in individual 21st position. Luibanta BH, bred by Justin Burke in County Galway, is the second highest Irish-bred Show Jumper in individual 99th position. In 185th position, Limestone Grey, bred in Limerick by David Moran, takes the third prize.

Horseware Stellor Rebound

On the Eventing front, Horseware Stellor Rebound is the top Irish-bred in 11th place. He was bred by Dublin’s Rhona Barnwall. Fellow World Equestrian Games team mate, Horseware Ardagh Highlight, bred by Theresa Walsh in Kilkenny, was two places behind in individual 13th making him the second highest placed Irish-bred. Last year’s Burghley CCI4* winner Ballaghmor Class, bred in Limerick by the late Noel Hickey, ranked individual 17th and 3rd highest Irish-bred in this year’s WBFSH rankings.

Speaking about the breeders prizes Horse Sport Ireland CEO Ronan Murphy added:

“These horses are fantastic brand ambassadors for Ireland and it is important to acknowledge the accomplishments of their respective breeders. I want to congratulate our Show Jumping prize winners, Susan Lanigan-O’Keeffe & Marily Power, Justin Burke and David Moran, and also our Eventing winners, Rhona Barnwall, Theresa Walsh and the late Noel Hickey.”
