Amateur Eligibility Explained

What is Amateur Eventing?

Amateur classes are for non-professional athletes in their 21st year and over who have busy lives, and enjoy having fun on their horse whilst competing against athletes of a similar standard.  These classes are competitive enough without the added pressure of competing with the professional athletes in the fabulous sport of Eventing!

Amateur classes are for part-time equestrians who don’t make a living riding horses, who don't produce horses for sale on a commercial basis, or earn an income from riding/schooling horses for a commercial yard.

The ethos of Amateur Eventing is to be supportive and sportsmanlike.

How do I know if I am eligible to compete as an Amateur Rider?

In a nutshell, if you answer 'yes' to any of the questions below, then you may not classify as an amateur:

  1. Have you jumped 1.25 or over in SJI or equivalent in the last year (with the horse/rider combination being registered)
  2. Have you competed representing Ireland on any level in eventing as a junior or adult in the last two years? Or have you received high-performance training
  3. Do you produce or sell horses on a commercial basis?
  4. Is your primary income from teaching or training equestrianism?
  5. Are you riding horses for a professional yard which may receive remuneration for sales in the future?

If there are any queries regarding the eligibility of an Amateur athlete, these should be forwarded in confidence to the Amateur Committee
