New Equine Traceability Requirements: Microchip & EPRNs

General News Horse Sport Ireland Rules

As part of the DAFM’s new Equine Traceability System, we now require microchip and Equine Premises numbers for all horses/ponies registered with EI.

What is an EPRN?

An EPRN is the unique number assigned by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) to every premises where horses are kept. It helps authorities trace equines quickly in the event of a disease outbreak or biosecurity concern.

How do I find or get an EPRN?

  • If you keep your horse at a livery yard, stud, or riding school, please ask the yard owner or manager for their EPRN.
  • If you keep horses on your own land, you can apply directly for an EPRN by completing the application form available on the DAFM website.
  • If the premises is already registered for other livestock (cattle, sheep, etc.), it can usually be updated to include horses.

Why is this important?

Adding your EPRN ensures that your horse’s details are fully traceable and compliant with national requirements

For equines registered in the North, DAERA would also like their establishment number recorded

You will be able to provide this information when registering a new horse/pony. You will also have to update this information in any existing horse/pony registration. Please take the following steps to update any horses/ponies registered to your account:

  1. Log into your EI Account
  2. Click on “My Horses”
  3. Click “Manage” beside the horse/pony you wish to update
  4. Click “Update”
  5. Input the microchip and Equine Premises number
  6. Click “Save”
